QVS U18 Team Vows to Overcome Challenges in Deans Trophy Quarterfinal

Discipline and leadership are key focuses for the defending Vodafone Deans Trophy champions, Queen Victoria School Under-18 team, as they prepare to face Marist Brothers High School in the quarterfinal match scheduled for tomorrow at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium.

QVS U18 captain Anare Tabakaucoro shared insights during an interview, emphasizing the team’s respect for Marist, despite their third-place finish in the zone competition. “We had a normal preparation and we know that Marist is a good team,” he remarked.

Tabakaucoro expressed the challenges he faced in integrating with the current QVS squad as a newcomer, having not played with them last year. “I usually advise my teammates based on the previous team’s strategies for planning, preparation, and execution. That’s what led us to win the Deans Trophy,” he said.

He highlighted that the team will again play not just for themselves, but also for their families, friends, and alumni. “Our biggest strength is the players honoring the sacrifices made by their parents,” he noted, mentioning that many team members come from distant locations and have been away from their families for a long time.

The captain also reflected on the motivation provided by personal backgrounds, acknowledging that many of his teammates were raised by single parents, which fuels their drive to perform well in every match.

Despite his experiences with the Fijian Warriors and the Fiji Under-20 teams, Tabakaucoro maintains a humble approach. “I always remind myself to stay grounded and put God first because everything in my life is not about me, it’s all about God. Our coaches have advised us not to just defend the Deans title this year, but to aim to win it again.”

In contrast, the U18 manager from Marist Brothers High School stated that they have chosen to maintain a low profile and will not be granting interviews.
