Former Flying Fijians forwards coach Senirusi Seruvakula played a pivotal role in Queen Victoria School’s 27-13 victory over Nasinu Secondary School in the Vodafone Deans Trophy grand final. Josaia Waiwalu, the head coach of the QVS Under-18 team, shared this insight after the match.
Waiwalu described Seruvakula as the team’s technical coach and expressed gratitude for his involvement, noting his status as an esteemed coach in the Pacific and an alumnus of the school. Earlier this year, Seruvakula was considered for the head coach position of the Flying Fijians. He previously guided the Fijian Drua to victory in the Australia National Rugby Championship in 2018 and coached the Fiji women’s rugby team at the 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup, where they secured a win against South Africa.
Waiwalu said the team had adequately prepared to defend the Deans Trophy against a strong opponent, emphasizing their strategy of maintaining possession throughout the game. He reflected on the journey of the team, highlighting the bond formed by players from diverse backgrounds, united by their shared experiences.
This latest win marks the 25th time QVS has clinched the Deans Trophy, reinforcing its significance as a cherished title among Tailevu schools.
In other news, QVS captain and first-five eighth Anare Tabakaucoro expressed his ambition to advance his rugby career, particularly with aspirations to play for the Fijian Drua while staying close to his mother. He played a crucial role during the final, demonstrating strong composure and control over the game. Tabakaucoro dedicated the victory to their parents, acknowledging the inspiration drawn from their support as many players were raised in single-parent households.
