Year 12 students from Queen Victoria School recently returned from an enlightening three-week trip to California, USA, which took place from December 7 to December 30, 2024. Accompanied by their parents, guardians, and teachers, the students had the opportunity to experience a different side of the world, filled with vast opportunities and advanced technology.
Setoki Butukoro, one of the students, reflected on the journey, sharing that the trip inspired him to pursue his studies more seriously in order to achieve his dreams. Another student, Ioane Qalo, emphasized the unique opportunities for education in America, particularly after their visits to various colleges and universities. The group had the notable experience of meeting a Senator at the California State Capitol, who encouraged them to dream big for themselves and their home country.
Team leader Ulai Butukoro praised the successful trip, highlighting the invaluable experiences it provided the students. They explored prestigious universities, including American River College, St. Mary’s College, Sonoma State University, and UC Berkeley, which is renowned globally. The visit to the robotics museum at UC Berkeley was particularly exciting for the students, showcasing the innovative spirit of the university. They also toured the headquarters of major tech companies like Apple and Google in Silicon Valley, further broadening their horizons.
This trip was made possible through the support of various organizations and individuals, including the USA QVSOB Association, the Ministry of Education, and the US Embassy. Ulai Butukoro expressed gratitude to the many Fijian communities and churches that offered support and hospitality during their stay.
