The family of Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, is seeking clarity surrounding his death while in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. Radua was reportedly found dead in his cell on Tuesday and was declared dead upon arrival at Savusavu Hospital.
According to Radua’s aunt, Unaisi Solaila, he was in good health when police officers took him from their home earlier that day. She expressed shock at receiving the news of his death just hours later. Solaila raised concerns that her nephew was placed in a cell with an individual suffering from mental illness, and claimed that a relative in custody overheard Radua calling for assistance.
Witnesses noted injuries and blood on Radua’s body when family members saw him at the hospital, leading them to question the circumstances of his death. Solaila stated, “We want to know what happened in the cell, as a relative claimed he was taken to the hospital deceased.”
In light of these troubling allegations, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew announced that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would be tasked with investigating the cause of death. Police officials indicated they would provide more information after the CID completes its inquiry.
This case underlines the importance of transparency and thorough investigations when a life is lost in custody. It is crucial that the family receives the answers they seek, which may help in finding closure and ensuring that such incidents are addressed appropriately in the future. It is hoped that the investigation will not only bring justice for Radua but also enhance the accountability of law enforcement practices, fostering a greater sense of trust within the community.
