The Queensland Reds have officially announced their squad for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, which features a combination of experienced players and promising young talents. Among the newcomers are Australian Under-20 prospects Trevor King and Will McCulloch, adding fresh energy to the team.
The roster includes 19 players with Test experience, highlighting the depth of the squad. This number comprises 18 Wallabies, plus former All Black Jeffery Toomaga-Allen. Notably, 12 players have surpassed the 50-cap mark, including Tate McDermott who will embark on the season with 91 caps under his belt.
Returning to the squad are experienced Wallabies Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Filipo Daugunu, both of whom are valuable additions for the upcoming season. Other new signings such as Lachie Anderson, Josh Canham, Matt Gibbon, and Mason Gordon are also set to contribute, having already integrated into the Reds through the International Program.
King, just 19, and McCulloch, 20, join Jude Gibbs, 23, in the squad as they aim to make their debut for the Reds. The International Program has proven beneficial for young talents like teenage centre Dre Pakeho, who has gained valuable experience playing against international teams despite not yet featuring for the Reds in a Super Rugby match.
Head coach Les Kiss emphasized the importance of evolution within the squad and the necessity for hard work to maximize their potential in a competitive environment. McCulloch expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, inspired by recent Academy graduates who have successfully transitioned to the professional ranks.
King has already showcased his talent as a tighthead prop with the Australian U20s, and Gibbs is eager to fulfill his long-held dream of playing at the Super Rugby level. Both players are grateful for the learning opportunities they have had and look forward to further development with the Reds.
The Queensland Reds will kick off their 2025 season against Moana Pasifika on February 21, after taking a bye in the opening round. This marks an exciting chapter for the team, as new signings and young talents come together to create a promising future.
Overall, the Reds’ squad reflects a strong commitment to nurturing emerging talent while retaining experienced players, paving the way for a competitive season ahead. As the team prepares for their opener, there is a shared sense of optimism that this season can bring about new achievements and further success.
