The flooding situation has become increasingly dire for residents of the Qauia settlement in Lami, just outside Suva, largely driven by the escalating effects of climate change. Mikaele Veretabua, a lifelong member of the community, highlighted the plight of nearly ten families residing near the river, who are compelled to evacuate their homes during flood events.

Veretabua pointed out the pressing need for a new bridge to replace the dilapidated hanging bridge that has served the area for three decades, asserting that current infrastructure is inadequate to handle the worsening conditions. He expressed his frustration that, despite the continued coverage of the flooding issue in the media, little progress has been made to find a resolution.

The impact of flooding extends beyond inconvenience, as Veretabua noted that hundreds of school children and families are caught in a cycle of disruption. He emphasized the urgency for immediate governmental intervention, stating, “Hundreds of school children and families call Qauia home and the flooding is only going to get worse if it’s not addressed immediately.”

The disappointment among residents is palpable, particularly as Veretabua claimed that political commitments made prior to elections have largely gone unfulfilled. He calls upon the government to take swift action, reminding them that the residents of Qauia play an integral role in the local economy.

In response, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, acknowledged the issues raised and affirmed that any additional work required will be assessed. He assured that district advisory councilors and community workers keep the government abreast of the needs in the area. Ditoka also confirmed the existence of evacuation centers that are prepared to be activated as necessary.

The ongoing dialogue highlights a community striving for safety and stability in the face of climate challenges, with hopes that government officials will take the necessary steps to address their concerns effectively.
