The Public Works Department (PWD) has officially become a legal entity within the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services & Transport. The government has mobilized heavy machinery branded with “PWD” to address urgent construction needs for access roads and the enhancement of existing roadways.
Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the poor condition of certain rural and maritime roads, stating that many had suffered from neglect under the previous administration. He explained that roads not included in the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) inventory system were classified as non-FRA roads, which typically do not receive attention from the FRA’s maintenance program.
This approach has shifted with the arrival of the Coalition Government, which has reinstated the PWD to ensure that all roads receive necessary maintenance. The government has invested in road construction machinery, now stationed at divisional depots in Suva, Lautoka, and Labasa.
Currently, PWD is engaged in roadworks in regions such as Nasereilagi, Nalidi, and Roma in Ra, Naisogo in Naitasiri, Nasealevu in Macuata, and Vanuabalavu in Lau.
This initiative marks a significant step toward improving the infrastructure and accessibility of roads across Fiji, reflecting the government’s commitment to investing in essential public services and improving the quality of life for its citizens. By addressing these infrastructure needs, the government aims to foster economic development and enhance connectivity throughout the islands.
