PWD Revitalization: New Equipment Set to Transform Infrastructure

The Public Works Department (PWD) is poised to resume full operations following its reinstatement by the government last year. In the past few months since its closure by the previous administration, PWD’s capabilities have been enhanced with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, delivered in Suva on Wednesday.

The handover ceremony for these earthmoving machines took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, where officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport received the equipment.

Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, emphasized the importance of the timely delivery of the new machinery for improving infrastructure and building capacity. He noted that these additions are part of a new inventory for the ministry.

“These machines will elevate road standards and conditions, improving access for economic activities,” Mr. Baleilevuka stated. He added that the equipment would strengthen their ability to carry out road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.

The ministry took delivery of:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck

The total value of the eight machines amounts to $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million to upgrade and enhance rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka indicated that this new equipment and vehicles will be deployed for upcoming projects.
