PWD Ready for Action: New Machinery Boosts Infrastructure Efforts

The Public Works Department (PWD) is geared to resume operations effectively following its reinstatement by the government last year. After a hiatus during which it was shut down by the previous administration, PWD has recently received a significant boost with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva on Wednesday.

The handover ceremony for the new equipment took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, emphasized that the timely arrival of these machines would enhance infrastructure development and capacity-building efforts.

Baleilevuka noted that the new tools are part of a broader set of equipment being introduced to the ministry. He stated, “These machines will improve road standards and conditions and enhance accessibility for economic activities.” He further added that the equipment would bolster their ability to perform road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.

The ministry received the following equipment:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck

The total value of these eight machines amounts to $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry has secured $5 million aimed at upgrading and improving rural roads. Baleilevuka indicated that the new equipment and vehicles would be utilized for upcoming projects.
