Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged uninterrupted fuel supplies to India, marking a significant moment in the two nations’ relationship, especially in the context of the ongoing geopolitical tensions. This announcement comes as the leaders agreed to explore the expansion of trade and defense cooperation during Putin’s recent two-day state visit to New Delhi, which was his first since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
India, being the largest global buyer of Russian arms and seaborne oil, has warmly welcomed Putin. However, New Delhi has adopted a cautious stance regarding this new offer. Concurrently, India is negotiating with the United States to potentially resolve disputes over punitive tariffs that were imposed during the Trump administration in response to India’s oil imports from Russia.
Currently, India’s energy imports are on track to hit a three-year low this month due to these tariffs and sanctions, which also reflects the complexities of its foreign policy. In an effort to bolster bilateral trade, Russia is keen on increasing its imports of Indian goods, aspiring to ramp up trade to $100 billion by the year 2030.
