Patrick Bower, president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, has called for primary schools across the nation to appoint dedicated physical education (PE) teachers. He pointed out that only a handful of primary institutions, such as International School Suva, currently employ PE specialists.
Despite these shortcomings, Bower emphasized the remarkable talent displayed by students during the first day of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, highlighting both the potential of the young athletes and the neglected state of physical education in primary and secondary schools. He stated, “Physical education isn’t just about rugby, soccer, or netball; it’s a comprehensive program essential for the holistic development of children.”
Bower noted that the presence of a PE teacher is rare at the primary level, despite their commonality in secondary education. He stressed the importance of having PE professionals in primary schools to foster a well-rounded educational experience.
While acknowledging that the day’s events faced delays and challenges, including late entries from districts and weather-related issues, Bower commended the efforts of coaches and officials. Issues such as athletes participating in other sports without prior arrangements led to some logistical complications. Nevertheless, he recognized the positive performances from the athletes and the resilience shown by all involved.
The competition, which resumed last year in Lautoka after being halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, concludes today, marking a significant return to athletics for primary school students.
