Punjas has announced the opening of its new $55 million Distribution Centre in Lautoka, which is set to be the largest warehouse in the Pacific, with a remarkable storage capability of 24,000 pallets. This state-of-the-art facility, which is currently under construction, reflects Punjas’ commitment to boosting its supply chain efficiency across Fiji and the Pacific region.
The Distribution Centre is a pivotal component of the company’s expansion strategy intended to cater to the increasing demand for both food and non-food products. This move further establishes Punjas as one of Fiji’s most significant privately owned enterprises.
Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, visited the facility to observe its progress and to understand the operational strategies in place. He remarked, “This new facility represents a significant advancement not just for Punjas, but for the Pacific region as a whole. It will enhance the efficiency of supply chains and will create new economic opportunities, thereby reinforcing Fiji’s status as a central figure in the expanding Pacific market.”
Founded in 1935, Punjas is preparing to celebrate its 90th anniversary next year and currently employs over 1,500 individuals. During his visit, Professor Prasad was briefed on the company’s contributions to both the local economy and its growing international footprint through its extensive range of Fijian-made products. The tour also included a look at Punjas’ corporate headquarters and its biscuit manufacturing operations, which are essential to the firm’s distribution network.
Additionally, Punjas is committed to corporate social responsibility, highlighted by the recent $2.25 million expansion of the Punjas Medical Centre, which aims to provide essential healthcare services to the local community. The company has also invested in enhancing the Punjas Children’s Park in Lautoka to improve the quality of life for residents.
The visit concluded with a dialogue between Professor Prasad and Punjas Senior Directors, Mr. Kanti Punja and Mr. Jagjiwan Punja, discussing the company’s vision for the future and its contribution to fostering economic growth. As Punjas approaches its 90th anniversary, it continues to be a driving force in Fiji’s economic advancement and community support.
This new development is a promising sign for both Punjas and the Pacific region, demonstrating that investment in infrastructure can lead to improved economic opportunities and overall better quality of life for the community.
