One of Fiji’s prominent privately-owned companies, Punjas Group of Companies, has officially launched its new $55 million distribution center in the Western Division as it prepares to celebrate its 90th anniversary next year. This state-of-the-art facility, currently under construction in Lautoka, is poised to become the largest warehouse in the Pacific, boasting a storage capacity of 24,000 pallets.
The development aligns with Punjas’ strategic growth plan aimed at bolstering its supply chain capabilities to better serve the increasing demand for both food and non-food products in Fiji and the wider Pacific region. During a recent visit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, toured the facility and acknowledged Punjas’ vital contribution not only to the local economy but also its expanding international footprint with its range of Fijian-made products.
Mr. Prasad described the investment as a notable milestone for both Punjas and the entire Pacific area, emphasizing its potential to improve the efficiency of regional supply chains and create new economic opportunities while solidifying Fiji’s role in the growing market of the Pacific.
Founded in 1935, Punjas currently employs over 1,500 staff members and is poised for celebration next year as it marks nine decades in operation. During the visit, Mr. Prasad also explored the company’s corporate headquarters and biscuit manufacturing facility, which continue to innovate in support of its extensive distribution network. The Deputy Prime Minister met with senior directors Kanti and Jagjiwan Punja to discuss the company’s forward-looking vision and its commitment to economic growth.
In addition to the new distribution center, Punjas recently announced an expansion of the Punjas Medical Centre through a $2.25 million investment from its charitable arm, aiming to enhance medical care access for the community. Furthermore, the company has expanded the Punjas Children’s Park in Lautoka as part of its ongoing dedication to improving the quality of life for the Fijian people.
This investment and expansion demonstrate Punjas’ significant role in shaping the local economy while providing hope for enhanced community services and employment opportunities in the years ahead. It reflects a positive outlook on both economic growth and social responsibility, inspiring other businesses to follow suit.
