Public Safety Assured Amidst Presidential Pardon Concerns

The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has assured the public of their safety following concerns about the recent release of George Speight, Shane Stevens, and others this week. The individuals were granted a Presidential pardon on Thursday.

Mr. Driu emphasized that the country remains calm and ordinary, urging the public to remain at ease. He stated, “I want to assure members of the public to be calm and that everything is normal. Considering the current situation, there is no threat, and the situation is manageable and controllable.”

He explained that the release was conducted through a proper judicial process, including the Mercy Commission and the president. Police are monitoring the situation closely and have observed that conditions are stable.

“We have seen that everything is under control. We have not received any concerns from the public; most inquiries have come from overseas media. I have reassured them that there is no threat and everything is calm,” said Mr. Driu.

He cautioned the public against taking matters into their own hands and warned that some individuals might exploit the situation for their own agendas. Furthermore, he addressed speculation on social media regarding potential unrest following Mr. Speight’s release, issuing a stern warning to those involved.

“If they intend to do anything, I am warning them that we are committed to ensuring the safety of all members of the public. We will continue to enforce the law,” he asserted. “No one is above the law. Anyone attempting to take advantage of the situation and instill fear among the public will face strict consequences.”
