Public Safety Assured Amid Recent Pardons: What You Need to Know

The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has reassured the public about their safety following concerns regarding the recent release of George Speight, Shane Stevens, and others through a Presidential pardon. This pardon was issued on Thursday.

Driu emphasized that the public should remain calm, stating that the current situation in the country is peaceful and under control. He noted, “There is no threat, and the situation is manageable and controllable.”

He explained that the release of these individuals followed due process through the judicial and corrections systems, as well as the Mercy Commission and the President. Police are actively monitoring the situation, and Driu stated that everything is under control.

He urged the public not to resort to taking matters into their own hands, warning that some individuals may attempt to exploit the situation for their own agendas. Driu also issued a strong warning to those spreading speculation on social media regarding potential unrest related to Speight’s release.

He reiterated that law enforcement will remain vigilant: “No one is above the law. We will take action against anyone who tries to instill fear in the public.”
