The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu has addressed public concerns regarding the release of George Speight, Shane Stevens, and others earlier this week, assuring citizens of their safety. The individuals were granted a Presidential pardon on Thursday.
Mr. Driu emphasized that the public should remain calm, stating that the situation in the country is stable and normal. He reassured citizens, saying, “There’s no threat and the situation is manageable and controllable.”
He explained that the release followed due processes involving the judicial system and the Mercy Commission, administered by the president. Police are actively monitoring the current situation.
Mr. Driu noted that they have received no reports of unrest from the public, only inquiries from international media, which he addressed by confirming that everything is calm.
He cautioned the public not to take matters into their own hands, warning that some might exploit the situation for personal gain. Additionally, he urged individuals speculating about potential unrest on social media to refrain from spreading fear, stating that the police will respond firmly to any attempts to disrupt peace.
Mr. Driu concluded by reinforcing that no one is above the law and that they will take action against those trying to instill fear among the public.
