The increasing prevalence of public alcohol consumption is contributing to a rise in drunken disturbances in Savusavu, according to Shankar Singh, chairperson of the Savusavu Special Administrators. Mr. Singh expressed concerns about the negative impact such behavior has on the local police reputation and their service quality.
He pointed out that during weekends, large groups of intoxicated individuals can be seen wandering the streets, making the town a hazardous environment for residents and visitors alike. Singh noted that despite numerous complaints from the community, police responses have been insufficient. He criticized their approach, stating, “They come, they see and then they leave.”
In response to these concerns, Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka revealed that a meeting with the special administrators had occurred two weeks prior to discuss the issues. He mentioned the establishment of a Viber group that includes council members to facilitate communication regarding community concerns.
Baledrokadroka assured that all matters raised in the meeting had been addressed in coordination with the special administrator’s office, highlighting the police’s willingness to engage with local leaders to improve the situation.
This ongoing dialogue between the community and the police offers hope for better management of public behavior and enhanced safety in Savusavu. The initiatives taken by the police indicate a commitment to responsive governance and a desire to foster a secure environment for all residents.
Overall, with increased collaboration and community input, there is potential for significant improvements in public safety and a reduction in alcohol-related disturbances in the town.
