The report regarding the suspension of Christopher Pryde, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, will be made public soon, following necessary reviews by Fiji’s President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. However, the publication of the findings is currently delayed due to the holiday season, as some key officials are on leave. The report was presented to the President on December 23, 2024.
Mr. Pryde has formally requested that the report be made available to the public, citing Section 112 (6) of the Constitution, which mandates public disclosure. He was suspended with full pay on April 13, 2023, due to alleged misbehavior linked to his interactions with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, following the establishment of a tribunal to investigate these allegations.
The tribunal, which included Justices Anare Tuilevuka, Chaitanya Lakshman, and Samuela Qica, has concluded its inquiries. Mr. Pryde highlighted that if the tribunal finds insufficient evidence against him, the suspension should be lifted in accordance with constitutional provisions. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the financial difficulties he has faced since the suspension.
The President’s office confirmed the necessity of reviewing the report thoroughly and has assured that it will be made public after officials return from their holiday breaks.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka refrained from commenting on the matter, stating it is not within his jurisdiction. Responses from the Minister for Justice and the Attorney-General are still awaited.
This situation highlights the importance of due process in judicial matters, ensuring that all parties involved receive a fair assessment. As the new year approaches, there is hope for a timely resolution that could restore stability for Mr. Pryde and reaffirm the commitment to transparency within the government.
