Pryde’s Suspension Report: What’s Keeping It Under Wraps?

The Tribunal’s findings regarding the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, will soon be made public, following a review by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. However, the release is currently on hold due to the holiday season, as some officials are on leave, according to a statement from the President’s Office. The report was formally submitted to the President on December 23, 2024.

In his recent correspondence, Pryde urged for the report to be shared with the public, citing Section 112 (6) of the Constitution which mandates public disclosure of the findings. He has been suspended—with full pay—since April 13, 2023, due to allegations of misbehaviour connected to his interactions with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. This suspension aligns with the provisions of the Fiji Constitution, which led to the establishment of a Tribunal comprising Justices Anare Tuilevuka, Chaitanya Lakshman, and Samuela Qica to assess the allegations.

Pryde pointed out that if the Tribunal finds insufficient evidence of wrongdoing, the President would be obliged under Section 112 (3)(c) to withdraw his suspension and reinstate him, which he considers a matter of urgency after nearly six months without his salary.

While Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka refrained from commenting on the matter, the President’s Office acknowledged the necessity of releasing the report in accordance with the law and committed to doing so once they have concluded their review process.

This situation underscores the importance of transparency and due process in governance, as the public awaits clarity on the allegations against Pryde. The anticipated release of the Tribunal’s report could bring relief or further complexities to the ongoing matter, fostering hope for a clear resolution in the new year.

In summary, the report on Christopher Pryde’s suspension will be publicly disclosed after the President has completed relevant consultations, and there are key constitutional implications that will determine the future of Pryde’s role as DPP.
