Christopher Pryde is set to officially resume his role as Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on January 20, 2025, following a favorable ruling from a three-member tribunal that cleared him of all allegations of misconduct. His suspension dates back to April 13, 2023, when concerns arose regarding his conversation with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during a social event.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka and including Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, conducted a thorough investigation and concluded that the allegations were unsubstantiated, highlighting a significant lack of evidence. Their findings were presented to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu on December 23, 2024, along with a recommendation for Pryde’s reinstatement.

As part of the reinstatement process, Pryde will revert to the terms of his original employment agreement from September 4, 2019, and he is entitled to receive compensation for any unpaid salary and benefits accrued during his suspension. To facilitate his return to office, he will report to the Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission to collect necessary official items, such as laptops and mobile devices.

This resolution not only marks Pryde’s return but also signifies a commitment to due process and transparency within Fiji’s judicial system. The tribunal’s ruling provides essential clarity on the previously ambiguous term “misbehavior” as defined in Fiji’s Constitution. This development is likely to bolster public confidence in judicial institutions, reflecting a robust approach to accountability and integrity within public service.

As Christopher Pryde prepares to take on his responsibilities again, there is hope that his leadership will enhance the effectiveness of the DPP office, contributing positively to the justice system in Fiji. His reinstatement represents a crucial step forward not only for him personally but also for establishing a more trustworthy and effective legal framework for the country.
