Christopher Pryde has made a significant return to his role as Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after a suspension that lasted for more than two years. Pryde’s mantra, “Keep Calm and Carry On,” has resonated with him throughout this challenging period.
Yesterday, the Fiji Government announced his reinstatement via a Facebook statement at 6:21 PM. In April 2023, Pryde had been suspended by then-President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere under section 112(4) of the 2013 Constitution due to an extended discussion he had with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at a social gathering on February 28, 2023.
Following his suspension, a three-member tribunal was established to investigate the incident. The current President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, reviewed the tribunal’s findings and communicated with Mr. Pryde about resuming his official duties.
As part of this transition, various directives were issued, including the reinstatement of Pryde’s employment agreement from September 4, 2019, and prompt repayment of his unpaid salary and benefits. Furthermore, he is required to report to the Judicial Services Commission to retrieve his official properties, including his laptop, mobile phone, and office keys, before proceeding to the Office of the DPP.
This decision symbolizes a resolution to one of the more prominent legal disputes within Fiji, and it is a hopeful moment for the legal community, suggesting a commitment to fairness and due process within the justice system. Mr. Pryde has not yet provided commentary following his reinstatement, but his return is anticipated to positively impact the legal proceedings in Fiji moving forward.
Overall, this event marks a new chapter in Pryde’s career, and it reinforces the importance of diligence and perseverance in the face of challenges.
