Christopher Pryde is set to officially resume his duties as Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on January 20, following a tribunal’s ruling that cleared him of misconduct allegations. In an email to the President’s Office, Pryde expressed his intention to return to work after being informed by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu about the tribunal’s findings delivered on December 23, 2024.

The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka and including Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, unanimously concluded that the allegations against Pryde were unfounded and lacked substantial evidence. In addition to rehabilitating Pryde’s position, the tribunal’s report provided key legal insights by defining “misbehaviour,” a term that was previously not clearly articulated in Fiji’s Constitution. This clarification is expected to enhance the procedures for addressing future complaints against judicial officers.

As part of his reinstatement, Pryde’s employment agreement from September 4, 2019, will be immediately reinstated, and he will receive back pay for the duration of his suspension, which began on April 13, 2023. To ensure a smooth transition, he is required to report to the Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission to reclaim all necessary official items before he officially takes up his role.
