Waqasaqa Votuwale expressed immense joy as his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, was honored as the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old secured this prestigious title during the school’s recent prizegiving ceremony, achieving an impressive score of 405 out of a possible 500 on her Year 13 annual examination.

Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village in Taveuni, shared insights into the sacrifices he and his wife made to prioritize their children’s education. The couple made the significant decision to move to Valebasoga, Labasa, leaving their village life behind to provide their children with improved educational opportunities.

“It was not an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale stated. As the primary breadwinner, he emphasized putting his children’s needs at the forefront. Neither he nor his wife completed secondary education due to financial challenges, but they were determined not to let that hinder their children’s potential.

Maraia’s remarkable achievement did not come as a surprise to her father, as her dedication has remained consistent throughout her academic journey. She was previously recognized as the dux in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. Aspiring to become an accountant, Maraia conveyed her gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices.

“As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, which motivated me to aim for the dux award,” Maraia shared. “I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”

This heartwarming story exemplifies the power of dedication and the lengths to which parents will go to ensure their children’s success. It serves as a reminder that with hard work and commitment, dreams are achievable, and the support of family can lead to remarkable accomplishments.
