Waqasaqa Votuwale is filled with pride after his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, was honored as the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old received this prestigious title during the school’s award ceremony on Wednesday, having scored an impressive 405 out of a possible 500 points in her Year 13 annual examination.
Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer hailing from Bouma Village in Taveuni, shared the tremendous sacrifices he and his wife made to ensure their children received a quality education. They made the significant decision to leave their village and relocate to Valebasoga to provide their children with better schooling opportunities.
“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale admitted. He emphasized that as the primary provider, he needed to prioritize his children’s education. Despite not completing secondary school due to financial difficulties, he was determined that these challenges would not hinder his children’s academic pursuits.
Maraia’s achievement is a reflection of her dedication and hard work; she had previously been recognized as the dux in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. With aspirations of becoming an accountant, Maraia expressed her heartfelt gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices, stating, “As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, which motivated me to aim for the dux award. I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”
