Waqasaqa Votuwale expressed immense pride as his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, was honored as the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. At just 18 years old, Maraia achieved this prestigious title during the school’s recent prizegiving ceremony, scoring an impressive 405 out of a possible 500 in her Year 13 annual examinations.
Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village in Taveuni, revealed the significant sacrifices he and his wife made to focus on their children’s educational pursuits. In pursuit of better educational opportunities, the couple made the difficult choice to leave their village and relocate to Valebasoga.
“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale shared. He is the sole provider for the family and emphasizes the importance of prioritizing his children’s future. Despite facing financial hardships that prevented both him and his wife from completing secondary education, he was determined not to let those challenges hinder his children’s potential.
Maraia’s recent achievements come as no surprise to her father, given her unwavering dedication to her studies. She had previously been recognized as the dux in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. With aspirations of becoming an accountant, Maraia expressed heartfelt gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices.
“As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, which is why I aimed for the dux award,” she stated. “I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”
