A father of five was overwhelmed with emotion after witnessing his eldest son, Sakaraia Qilu, 22, receive two prestigious awards at the Fiji National University graduation ceremony. Alipate Moli, the sole provider for his family, attended the event with his entire family to celebrate his son’s remarkable achievements, which included the Outstanding Academic Achievement Graduate award in Nursing, as well as a Certificate of Excellence and Dean’s Honors.
Mr. Moli expressed his pride, stating, “It was the proudest moment for any father who’s been toiling day and night to ensure that his children make it.” Despite his demanding job, where he spends 11 days working at an island resort and only three days at home, he ensures he remains connected with his children by checking in on their academic progress regularly.
Sakaraia’s accomplishments were no surprise; he consistently excelled in school, earning third place in his classes during Years Nine to Eleven at Saint Peter Chanel School, and receiving the Best Biology Student award in Years 12 and 13. His passion for nursing stems from a deep desire to care for others, leading him to consider careers in nursing, public health, or education.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Qilu has ambitious plans to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program, with aspirations of obtaining a doctorate. He aims to inspire his siblings about the importance of education, urging them to strive for success and avoid pitfalls like drug addiction or idleness. He credits his mother for constantly reminding him of life’s realities and motivating him to reach his current position.
In his parting advice to others, Mr. Qilu emphasizes the significance of surrounding oneself with positive influences: “Get better friends! As long as you have a good circle of friends who can help you move forward then you will make it!”
This heartwarming story underscores the values of hard work, determination, and the power of family support in achieving one’s dreams. It serves as an inspiring reminder for students and families alike, motivating them to pursue their goals and uplift one another.
