Waqasaqa Votuwale is celebrating as one of the proudest fathers after his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, was awarded the prestigious title of dux at Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old excelled in her Year 13 annual examination, achieving an impressive score of 405 out of 500 during the school’s recent prizegiving ceremony.

Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer hailing from Bouma Village in Taveuni, spoke about the sacrifices he and his wife made to prioritize their children’s education. The couple made the difficult decision to move to Valebasoga, Labasa, leaving behind their village life to provide better schooling opportunities for their children.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale stated. As the family’s sole breadwinner, he emphasized the importance of putting his children’s needs first. Both he and his wife faced financial challenges that prevented them from completing their own secondary education, but they were determined not to let that hinder their children’s success.

Maraia’s achievement was not unexpected, as she had previously been named dux for her Year 12 Certificate Examination as well. Aspiring to become an accountant, she expressed heartfelt gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices, stating, “As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, and that is why I aimed for the dux award. I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”

This story highlights the profound impact that parental support and determination can have on a child’s education and future aspirations. Maraia’s success is a testament to the strength of family commitment and the pursuit of dreams, reflecting that with hard work and dedication, great achievements are possible.

In summary, this narrative showcases not only a personal triumph but also serves as an inspiration to others about the transformative power of education and the sacrifices parents make for their children’s futures. It’s a reminder that challenges can be overcome in the pursuit of excellence.
