The government has proactively responded to concerns regarding the treatment and welfare of workers involved in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring that the rights and needs of these workers are effectively addressed.

In light of reports suggesting some workers faced exploitation and described their situations as “modern slavery,” Mr. Singh highlighted the government’s ongoing engagement with stakeholders. He stated, “We have visited Australia three times since taking office, meeting with workers, employers, and government representatives to address the concerns raised by our laborers. These interactions have led to noticeable improvements.”

To enhance support, the government has appointed three country liaison officers in Australia, who are available for workers to directly communicate any concerns regarding their employment conditions. A significant issue identified by workers was access to healthcare. In response, a healthcare scheme has been implemented for PALM workers, which incorporates a weekly contribution from the workers to ensure they have health coverage.

Additionally, the government has provided insurance for repatriation in emergencies and for injuries sustained during employment. Mr. Singh reassured that the Australian government has committed to enforcing compliance and minimum standards to guarantee that Fijian workers receive equitable treatment alongside local Australian workers.

These initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of Fijian laborers abroad, ensuring they enjoy the same protections and benefits as their Australian counterparts.

In summary, the government is taking decisive steps to enhance the welfare of workers involved in the PALM scheme, focusing on healthcare access, liaison support, and equal rights. This commitment creates a hopeful outlook for Fijian workers, emphasizing the importance of fair and safe working conditions.
