The Fijian government has issued a strong reminder to its workers planning to go overseas under labour mobility schemes about the importance of protecting their families and adhering to their employment contracts. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh delivered this warning during a farewell ceremony for 90 Fijian workers heading to Australia, which included 57 individuals embarking on their first journey abroad and 33 returning workers.

Minister Singh emphasized that the labour mobility scheme is intended to enhance families’ welfare and improve their livelihoods, rather than jeopardizing these by engaging in misconduct or breaching contracts. He specifically cautioned against abandoning sanctioned employment arrangements or participating in illegal cash work, noting that these actions could lead to financial loss, lack of insurance, premature repatriation, and permanent exclusion from future overseas job opportunities.

He urged the departing workers, saying, “Protect your relationships. Protect your reputation. Protect your future.” Singh also highlighted that they should be aware of their rights as workers in Australia. He reassured them that, like in Fiji, Australian law offers equal rights to all workers, regardless of their nationality, and they should ensure their rights are respected, which includes safe working conditions and fair treatment.

While acknowledging that most Fijian workers maintain commendable conduct while abroad, Singh pointed out that even a few instances of misconduct can have detrimental effects, both on families and on the integrity of the labour mobility scheme. The government reiterated that the success of this program relies on responsible behavior, adherence to workplace rules, and respect for contractual obligations, all of which play a crucial role in safeguarding families and securing future employment opportunities for generations to come.

This proactive approach by the Fijian government not only aims to protect its workers but also fosters a positive environment where families can thrive through the benefits of lawful and ethical employment practices abroad.
