The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) plans to create conservation zones via landowner units and master land use plans, according to the board’s environment officer, Josua Waqanivalu. While speaking at the Situation Analysis Workshop on Forest Landscape Restoration in Fiji, held in Nadi, Waqanivalu revealed that the organization aims to solidify these zones through lease agreements with parties dedicated to environmental conservation.
Waqanivalu stated that the selection of these areas would depend on their biodiversity and cultural importance. The blueprint for land utilization includes strategies for sensible land use, and specific demarcation and mapping to deter unauthorized activities. Conservation areas are being leased to protect wildlife habitats and cultural heritage, with further collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry to locate more sites for leasing.
