Prophet Muhammad’s Legacy: A Call for Peace and Inclusivity

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development, and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting the values of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. He made these remarks as he extended warm wishes to Fiji’s Muslim community in celebration of the Prophet’s birthday.

Professor Prasad noted that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are foundational for the advancement of society, economically and politically. He acknowledged the significant contributions of various religious groups to Fiji, particularly pointing out the essential role of the Muslim community in the nation’s progress.

He stressed that these foundational principles are crucial for fostering lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, while also being vital for inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.

Reflecting on historical milestones, Professor Prasad reminded the audience that in 1974, the National Federation Party, led by Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, collaborated with then Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to declare Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays. This was a notable act of bipartisanship in the interest of national unity.

In closing, he wished the Muslim community a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday, underlining the importance of Fiji’s multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society.
