The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for anticipated wet weather conditions expected over the next 48 hours. In a recent meeting, Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima gathered team leaders from crucial sectors, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and Land Transport Authority. The goal was to finalize operational plans and ensure that necessary resources are in place to support affected communities.

Currently, the FRA has reported that connecting roads across the island remain clear and accessible, despite experiencing heavy rain overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a detailed weather forecast, allowing stakeholders to fine-tune their preparedness strategies.

In an effort to safeguard the community, the Ministry of Education has been notified to prepare schools as potential evacuation centers if needed. Residents living in low-lying areas are being urged to take precautionary measures and relocate to higher ground during daylight hours to mitigate risks. Authorities emphasize the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel at night to ensure safety and to ease the burden on first responders. In cases of uncertainty regarding evacuation centers or if assistance is needed, residents are advised to contact local authorities or the police.

Farmers are also being encouraged to move their livestock to safer grounds and take all necessary precautions to protect their livelihoods. Rainima emphasizes the necessity of prioritizing safety during this period, urging the public to listen to weather advisories and updates and act promptly, especially those in vulnerable areas.

Residents are reminded to remain calm and reach out for help whenever necessary. The Commissioner’s Office plans to monitor the situation closely and to relay timely updates to the community.

This proactive stance taken by authorities highlights the importance of preparedness and community cooperation in mitigating the effects of severe weather. By taking preventive measures now, residents can help safeguard themselves, their families, and their properties as they face the impending rain.
