Prisoners Protest with Hunger Strike: What Happened?

Two inmates at a correctional facility in Fiji have commenced a hunger strike. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) reported that the protest began on Friday, September 20, 2024, following the inmates’ removal from their kitchen positions.

According to the FCS, the decision to suspend the inmates was made after a dispute concerning the management of food supplies prompted an internal investigation. The inmates are voicing their grievances, seeking to be reinstated to their previous kitchen roles. Despite efforts from senior staff, healthcare professionals, and other support personnel to address their concerns, the inmates have chosen to continue their hunger strike. The FCS is also reaching out to spiritual leaders of the inmates’ respective faiths for additional support.

The Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission have been informed about the situation regarding the hunger strike. The FCS emphasized that the health and safety of the inmates are its top priorities, stating that medical staff are closely monitoring their condition and implementing necessary precautions during this time.

The FCS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all inmates while addressing their grievances through established procedures. They are actively working to resolve the issue and will provide updates as necessary.
