Prisoners Persist in Hunger Strike Despite Counselors’ Efforts

Two inmates at Naboro Maximum Prison remain on hunger strike despite receiving counselling. Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa reported that doctors, psychologists, and spiritual leaders visited the prisoners yesterday, but they continue to refuse food. Dr. Nakarawa noted that the Human Rights Commission had also reached out to them.

The FCS confirmed that the inmates had previously worked in the prison kitchen but were removed from their duties after a dispute regarding food supply management, which triggered an internal investigation. The inmates have expressed their frustration over this decision and are demanding to be reinstated to their former roles. Despite multiple counselling sessions from senior officers and healthcare professionals, they persist in their hunger strike.
