All four prisoners who escaped from Korovou Prison have been recaptured following a swift and coordinated effort between the Fiji Police Force and Fiji Corrections Services. Acting Commissioner of Police Livai Driu confirmed the capture, which took place after the escape was reported around 9 PM.
In response to the escape, authorities activated several roadblocks along the Suva–Nausori corridor, which remained in place until the early hours of the morning. The escapees, now in police custody, will face charges for their escape from lawful custody before being returned to corrections services.
This incident brings to light ongoing concerns about prison security in Fiji, echoing similar cases that have prompted discussions regarding the effectiveness of safety measures in correctional facilities. Community vigilance and cooperation played a critical role in the successful recapture of the inmates, underscoring the vital partnership between the public and law enforcement in maintaining community safety.
The swift resolution of this event illustrates the commitment of the authorities to act decisively in preserving security and emphasizes the community’s role in such efforts. It is hoped that this incident will spur necessary improvements to security protocols in Fiji’s correctional system, ultimately leading to a safer environment for both the public and inmates.
