Desna Solofa, the Acting Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum, delivered a compelling address on Wednesday at the Pacific Child Wellbeing Summit. She emphasized the critical need to prioritize the wellbeing of the region’s youth, who are facing unprecedented challenges in today’s world.
In her remarks, Solofa drew attention to the unique pressures children experience today, including the implications of the digital age, climate change, mental health struggles, and violence. “Pacific children now face new opportunities and challenges,” she stated, highlighting the necessity for a comprehensive approach to secure their education, health, and safety.
Citing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, Solofa reinforced the commitment among Pacific leaders to a long-term vision that prioritizes children’s futures. She called for sustained investment in youth, stating, “We must invest in their future by providing them with the opportunities, support, and safe environment they need to reach their full potential.”
The summit gathered various ministers and officials committed to working collaboratively for a more prosperous future for the region. Echoing sentiments from previous discussions at the summit, including the urgent need to combat violence and child neglect, Solofa reiterated that the future of the Pacific lies in the hands of its children. The collaborative spirit demonstrated throughout the summit is a hopeful indicator of the region’s dedication to fostering safer and healthier childhoods.
Additionally, stakeholders celebrated similar recent initiatives, such as Fiji’s National Early Childhood Development Policy for 2024-2028, aimed at improving child welfare and education throughout the region. These efforts signify a unified approach to facing the challenges that impact the Pacific’s youngest generation.
This proactive focus on child welfare highlights a shared commitment across the Pacific to nurture a healthier, more engaging environment for children, which ultimately plays a vital role in shaping a brighter future for the entire region.
