As families prepare for the upcoming school holidays and festive season, parents are being encouraged to identify potential hazards in their communities to protect their children’s safety and well-being. Shairana Ali, CEO of Save the Children Fiji, emphasized the increased vulnerability of children to abuse amid rising incidents of criminal and drug-related activities.
With the school break extending for seven weeks starting this weekend, it is crucial for parents and guardians to be vigilant, as children and teenagers may face greater risks of exposure to drugs, alcohol, and other illegal activities. Ali stressed the importance of supervision and community involvement in ensuring the security of children during this time.
“The responsibility lies with parents, guardians, and caregivers to work collaboratively toward creating a safe environment for our youth. Parents must ensure that while children are outside, they are accompanied by a responsible adult,” Ali stated.
Deputy Director of Community Policing, Superintendent Rakesh Chand, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that while school environments provide supervision, parents must remain aware of their children’s whereabouts and responsibilities at home. He pointed out that parents’ involvement is crucial, especially with increased police monitoring during the holidays.
Save the Children Fiji is advocating for open dialogues between parents and their children regarding safety, along with active monitoring of their activities, to cultivate awareness about harmful substances and risky situations. Ali further reminded parents to prioritize family time, fostering supportive bonds that deter adverse outcomes.
As the festive season approaches, it is essential for parents to take proactive measures to safeguard against potential incidents, ensuring that children can enjoy their break in a secure environment.
This call to action not only highlights the critical role of parents during these vulnerable times but also reinforces community unity in protecting the next generation. Emphasizing communication and supervision may lead to a safer and more enjoyable holiday season for families.
