As the school holidays and festive season approach, parents are being called upon to actively identify and address potential hazards in their communities to safeguard their children’s well-being.
Shairana Ali, CEO of Save the Children Fiji, has expressed concern over the increased vulnerability of children to abuse amid rising incidents of criminal and drug-related activities. With a seven-week school break beginning soon, Ali warns that the likelihood of children and teenagers being exposed to drugs, alcohol, and other unsafe behaviors significantly increases during this time.
She emphasizes the crucial role that parents, guardians, and caregivers play in creating a safe environment. “It’s very important that parents supervise their children, ensuring they have responsible adults looking after them when they are out,” stated Ali.
Deputy Director of Community Policing, Superintendent Rakesh Chand, supports this message by underscoring the importance of parents’ duty of care. While monitoring efforts will be heightened during the holidays, he stresses that parental engagement is indispensable. “When children are in school, their safety is the teachers’ responsibility; however, once at home, it falls on the parents. They must be aware of their children’s whereabouts and responsibilities towards them,” he remarked.
Both Save the Children Fiji and local law enforcement encourage parents to engage in open discussions with their children about safety, to keep track of their activities, and to educate them about harmful substances and activities. Ali underscores that prioritizing family time and being actively involved in their children’s lives can make a significant difference in preventing incidents during the holiday period.
Parents are reminded that their proactive involvement is critical to ensuring a safe and enjoyable school break for their children.
This call to action highlights the essential role families play in children’s safety, fostering a community of awareness and support. By remaining vigilant and engaged, parents can help protect their children and create a positive holiday experience filled with joy and security.
