Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka visited Robertson Road in Suva this morning, prompted by a troubling video that circulated on social media depicting minors engaged in drug injections in public spaces. Mr. Rabuka expressed his alarm over the footage, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address the escalating issue.

Upon arriving at the site, the Prime Minister spoke with residents who have experienced the detrimental effects of this issue in their community for some time. He stated, “This situation is very serious; no community should have to tolerate such dangerous and illegal activity, especially when it involves our young people.”

In response to the gravity of the situation, Mr. Rabuka has directed the Fiji Police Force to enhance patrols not only in this area but also in other hotspots where serious offenses, including public drinking and drug use, are reported. He pointed out that this challenge transcends mere law enforcement; it is fundamentally about public health and the safety of the nation’s youth, insisting that efforts must focus on safeguarding children and restoring security within communities.

Furthermore, Mr. Rabuka highlighted the importance of collaboration among communities to combat the drug crisis, echoing sentiments from a recent communication about discarded syringes found during a cleanup post-Miss Hibiscus Festival. He believes that the push against drug abuse needs to originate with parents before extending to schools, religious groups, and the wider community.

In light of these developments, there remains a hopeful perspective as communities are encouraged to unite and take proactive measures in protecting youth and promoting a healthier, drug-free environment. Together, the collective effort can foster positive change, leading to a safer Fiji for future generations.
