A pretrial conference for Sigatoka residents Mohammed Naushad and Nazreen Nisha Khan is scheduled for February 6 of next year. The couple faces charges related to the murder of an 18-year-old student, with Naushad also facing an additional charge of criminal intimidation.
The allegations state that the couple compelled the victim to consume a chemical at their residence in Maro, Sigatoka, on June 30, 2022. During a hearing held in the High Court in Lautoka, the couple was represented by attorney Aloesi Degei, while the state was represented by Shahil Kumar.
The court acknowledged that all pretrial issues were addressed and confirmed that a hearing day would be arranged early next year. Justice Riyaz Hamza indicated that the matter could not be expedited due to the legal vacation but noted that the defense could file a motion if necessary. He also mentioned that the trial is set to continue from March 17 to March 28 next year, adding that the couple has been in remand for over two years.
The case continues to unfold, reflecting the complexities of the legal process while reminding us of the system’s commitment to justice.
This situation emphasizes the importance of a fair trial, ultimately reinforcing the notion that everyone deserves an opportunity to defend themselves against allegations in a court of law. As the pretrial conference approaches, it could offer a step toward resolution for all parties involved.
