The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is calling for the protection of freedom of expression and press freedom across the Pacific region. The organization has expressed concern over a defamation lawsuit filed by Surangel Whipps Jr’s father against the national newspaper, Island Times Palau.
The lawsuit, submitted by Whipps Snr’s company, Surangel and Sons, targets the paper’s editor, Leilani Reklai. Following the filing, Whipps Jr publicly criticized the newspaper, claiming it disseminates political propaganda and is inaccurate.
In response to these developments, PINA has pledged to gather regional and international support for Reklai. Kalafi Moala, PINA’s president, emphasized that the media’s role in defending democracy is increasingly vital. He urged for immediate advocacy for freedom not only in Palau but throughout the Pacific, highlighting ongoing challenges to free speech in certain countries, including what he perceives as intimidation tactics in Palau.
PINA has formally communicated its concerns to the Palau President’s office and reiterated that freedom of speech and democracy are inherently linked. This message comes at a crucial time as Palauans participated in elections recently.
The commitment from PINA serves as a reminder of the fundamental role the media plays in maintaining democratic values. As discussions on press freedom unfold, there is hope that these efforts will foster an environment where journalism can thrive without fear, ensuring that voices are heard and democracy is upheld throughout the Pacific.
