President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office at the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to appoint a new President.
Reports suggest that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position. An earlier session was planned for October 3 to handle the nomination and appointment of the President, with the agenda item listed as number 4 on the Order Paper. However, this agenda was postponed after concerns were raised by Mr. Rabuka regarding potential issues surrounding the presidential nomination.
Mr. Rabuka requested that Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu withdraw the agenda item, mentioning some “discomfort” related to his nomination. Meanwhile, the Opposition has not revealed their nomination plans.
