President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is anticipated to secure a second term in office at the end of the month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has set a meeting for Parliament on October 31 at 11 am to appoint a new President. According to sources, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position.
Originally, Parliament was scheduled to make the presidential nomination and appointment on October 3, as it was listed as item number 4 on the agenda for that sitting. However, the agenda was postponed after Prime Minister Rabuka indicated a potential disagreement regarding the presidential nomination.
Rabuka subsequently requested the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw item number 4, pointing out that there was some ‘discomfort’ surrounding his nomination. Meanwhile, the Opposition has not disclosed their nomination plans.
