Former Presidents will soon have a shorter waiting period to access their pension benefits, as the eligibility term has been reduced from five years to three years. This significant amendment comes after Parliament approved the Presidential Pensions (Amendment) Bill 2024 with unanimous support, aligning the Presidential Pensions Act 1994 with the stipulations of the 2013 Constitution.

During the motion presentation, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that this change is essential for maintaining consistency with the current Constitution, which specifies a three-year term for the Presidency. Previously, the 1994 Act required former Presidents to serve a full five years to qualify for a range of benefits, including access to a ministerial-style vehicle and driver, comprehensive medical coverage, annual funding for personal staff, and security protection determined by the Prime Minister.

With the implementation of the new amendment, these benefits will be available to Presidents who complete a three-year term. Notably, the amendment also applies to former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. This move has received support from members of the Opposition, showcasing a rare instance of political agreement on the matter.

This development not only streamlines the process for former Presidents but also reflects a broader commitment to constitutional integrity and fairness. It underscores a collaborative effort within the Parliament to ensure that former leaders are afforded their due benefits sooner, promoting a sense of stability and respect for those who serve in the highest office.

In summary, the amendment reduces the eligibility period for former Presidents to access pension benefits from five to three years, promoting efficiency and aligning with constitutional requirements. The parliamentary support for this change indicates a shared recognition of the importance of fair treatment for former leaders.
