The eligibility period for former Presidents to receive pension benefits has been shortened from five years to three years. This change comes after Parliament unanimously approved the Presidential Pensions (Amendment) Bill 2024, ensuring that the Presidential Pensions Act of 1994 aligns with the 2013 Constitution.
During the motion for this amendment, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that the adjustment is essential for consistency with the current constitutional framework, which stipulates a three-year term for Presidents. Previously, the 1994 Act required former Presidents to complete a five-year term before becoming eligible for benefits. These benefits include access to a ministerial-style vehicle and driver, comprehensive medical coverage, annual funding for personal staff, and security protection as determined by the Prime Minister.
With the enactment of this Bill, former Presidents will now be entitled to these benefits after serving a full three-year term. Prime Minister Rabuka confirmed that this change applies to former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
