President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take swift measures to safeguard his community from the rising illicit drug problem. He voiced his alarm over the increasing prevalence of drug use throughout the nation.

Ratu Wiliame made these remarks during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held in Tamavua Village, Suva, yesterday. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders for the well-being of the province.

“It is crucial that we unite to improve our province. The vanua must partner with the youth and local communities to tackle the significant social challenges we face,” said Ratu Wiliame.

He expressed his deep concern about the negative impacts of drugs on the youth, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to protect current and future generations. “Cultural values and respect for elders must be instilled within families and the vanua,” he noted.

He also encouraged young people who have dropped out of school to consider enrolling in technical schools, which he believes could help them address social challenges and contribute to community growth.

“We should not blame others; it’s our responsibility to confront this issue,” Ratu Wiliame stated, advocating for a thorough village profiling initiative to help the government offer tailored support for Naitasiri residents.

Additionally, he urged the community to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier dietary practices. “The Ministry of Health reports that 80 percent of deaths result from NCDs. We need to reflect on what actions we can take as a province to tackle this issue,” he said.

Ratu Wiliame encouraged the people to look back at the lifestyles of their ancestors, promoting the consumption of locally grown food for better health.
