The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is proactively preparing for predicted wet weather over the next two days. Earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima held a meeting with leaders from essential services such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services, as well as the Land Transport Authority. The goal was to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are ready to assist communities that may be affected.

According to the FRA, connecting roads across the island remain clear, and accessibility has not been hindered despite heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a detailed weather forecast that has helped stakeholders adapt their preparedness strategies accordingly.

The Ministry of Education has been notified to prepare schools to act as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying areas are encouraged to take preventive measures, including moving to higher ground during daylight hours to minimize risks. It is advised to limit unnecessary movement at night to ensure personal safety and to facilitate the actions of first responders.

Commissioner Rainima also calls on farmers to relocate livestock to safer areas and secure their livelihoods.

“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm and don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed,” Rainima emphasized.

The Commissioner’s Office will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates. Residents requiring assistance can contact the following numbers for support.

This proactive approach reflects a commitment to community safety and preparedness. As weather conditions sometimes pose risks, it’s heartening to see local authorities taking steps to ensure the safety of their residents. It is crucial for everyone to acknowledge the importance of preparation and cooperation in times of adverse weather to reduce potential disruptions and ensure that help is readily available when needed.

In summary, the Divisional Commissioner is emphasizing preparedness for heavy rains and encouraging community action to stay safe during this wet weather forecast.
