The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is taking active measures to brace for inclement weather expected in the next 48 hours. Today, Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima convened with team leaders from critical services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, the Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services. They finalized operational plans to ensure resources are ready to assist communities in need.

Currently, the FRA reports that the island’s connecting roads remain clear, and access has not been hindered by the heavy rainfall experienced last night. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided extensive forecasts, allowing stakeholders to tailor their preparedness strategies effectively.

The Ministry of Education has been alerted to prepare schools to serve as potential evacuation centers if necessary. Residents residing in low-lying areas are urged to take immediate precautions and seek higher ground during daylight hours to reduce risks to their safety. They are also advised to minimize movement during night hours to safeguard themselves and aid first responders.

Rainima emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety during this period, advising the public to stay informed through weather updates and act prudently, especially in vulnerable areas. “It’s crucial to remain calm and reach out for help if required,” Rainima stated. Farmers have been encouraged to relocate their livestock to safer ground and implement protective measures for their livelihoods.

The Commissioner’s Office is committed to keeping a close watch on the evolving situation and will provide timely updates to the community.

For assistance, residents can contact the Commissioner Northern’s Office or their nearest police station.

This proactive response showcases the dedication of local authorities to ensure community safety and bolster resilience against potential adverse weather conditions. By remaining vigilant and prepared, residents can better protect themselves and their properties during this challenging time.
