The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for anticipated wet weather conditions expected over the next two days. Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima held a meeting with leaders from essential services such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority to finalize operational plans and ensure resources are ready to assist communities that may be affected.
The FRA has confirmed that all connecting roads remain clear, maintaining accessibility despite heavy rainfall overnight. Updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service have supplied a detailed forecast that allows stakeholders to fine-tune their preparations further.
In response to the potential weather impacts, the Ministry of Education has been instructed to prepare schools as possible evacuation centers. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to take precautions by relocating to higher ground during daylight hours to reduce risks. Authorities advise against unnecessary movement at night to enhance safety for both residents and first responders. Those unsure about evacuation centers or in need of assistance are encouraged to contact local authorities or police immediately.
Rainima has also advised farmers to relocate their livestock to higher ground and take additional precautions to safeguard their livelihoods. Emphasizing safety, she stated, “We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”
The Commissioner’s Office will closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates.
This proactive response reflects a strong commitment to community safety and preparedness in the face of potential natural hazards. Cooperation among various agencies showcases a coordinated effort to mitigate risks and ensure that everyone is well-informed. It’s a reminder of the resilience and support within the community during challenging weather events.
