Residents in Fiji’s Central and Eastern Division are being warned to prepare for potential water disruptions as heavy rainfall affects water supply systems. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist, leading to operational challenges.
WAF advises Fijians to store enough water to last two to three days while it is still available. The heavy rains can cause significant issues for water supply systems, including blockages at water intakes, which disrupt operations and result in low reservoir levels. Additionally, rainfall increases turbidity in water sources, as soil and sediment are washed in, further complicating water quality.
WAF is actively monitoring the situation and will take necessary precautions to minimize the impact on residents. While teams will address any issues caused by blocked intakes and flooding, repairs can only commence when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to conserve water and limit usage to essential needs. It is advisable to fill containers and bathtubs with clean water for emergency use ahead of severe weather.
Residents are also urged to stay informed with the latest updates and prepare an emergency kit that includes bottled water and other essential supplies.
